PART I A user account has a number of attributes defined at account creation time These will be applied to sessions that connect to the account, though some can be modified by the session or the DBA while the session is running These attributes are Username Authentication method Default tablespace Tablespace quotas Temporary tablespace User profile Account status All of these should be specified when creating the user, though only username and authentication methods are mandatory; the others have defaults

The username must be unique in the database and must conform to certain rules A username must begin with a letter, must have no more than 30 characters, and can consist of only letters, digits, and the characters dollar ($) and underscore (_) A user name may not be a reserved word The letters are case sensitive but will be automatically converted to uppercase All these rules (with the exception of the length) can be broken if the username is specified within double quotes, as shown on Figure 6-1

Because you can have so many layers in a layered Photoshop document, it s important to properly manage those layers If left unmanaged, the Layers palette can quickly become an overwhelming mess For example, suppose you created a file with many layers, none of which had custom names, such as the one shown in Figure 6-2 While the thumbnail images on each layer can provide a bit of help, it s difficult to determine exactly what s on most layers And what if you close the file and then need to edit it two weeks later You d need to click through each of the layers just to remind yourself of their contents To avoid situations like this, it s best to properly manage layers by doing the following: Give them descriptive names Group them into layer sets, wherever possible Link them to force movements and transformations to be applied uniformly Lock them to prevent unwanted changes

In the first example in the figure, a username JOHN is created This was entered in lowercase, but is converted to uppercase, as can be seen in the first query The second example uses double quotes to create the user with a name in lowercase The third and fourth examples use double quotes to bypass the rules on characters and reserved words; both of these would fail without the double quotes If a username includes lowercase letters or illegal characters or is a reserved word, then double quotes must always be used to connect to the account subsequently TIP It is possible to use nonstandard usernames, but this may cause dreadful confusion Some applications rely on the case conversion; others always use double quotes It is good practice to always use uppercase and only the standard characters A username can never be changed after creation If it is necessary to change it, the account must be dropped and another account created This is a drastic action, because all the objects in the user s schema will be dropped along with the user

The name of the user who owns the object to be audited This defaults to the user who is creating the policy The name of the table to be audited Every FGA policy created must be given a unique name An expression to determine which rows will generate an audit record If left NULL, access to any row is audited A list of columns to be audited If left NULL, then access to any column is audited The username that owns the procedure to run when the audit condition is met The default is the user who is creating the policy A PL/SQL procedure to execute when the audit condition is met By default, this is TRUE: the policy will be active and can be disabled with the DISABLE_POLICY procedure If FALSE, then the ENABLE_POLICY procedure must be used to activate the policy
