Recovery set The group of datafiles containing the tablespace(s) to be recovered Auxiliary set Other datafiles required to recover the tablespace(s), such as the datafiles for the SYSTEM, UNDO, and TEMP tablespaces Auxiliary destination A temporary location to store the auxiliary set of files, including online and archived redo log files, and a copy of the controlfile created during the recovery process The key to TSPITR is an auxiliary instance to facilitate the recovery process, as covered earlier in this chapter The auxiliary instance does the work of restoring a backup controlfile from before the desired point in time, restores the recovery set and the auxiliary set from the target database, and finally recovers the database for the auxiliary instance to the desired point in time Here is a complete list of steps that RMAN performs during TSPITR: 1 Starts an auxiliary instance with a randomly generated name 2 Restores a controlfile to the auxiliary instance, and mounts the auxiliary database 3 Restores the datafiles for the recovery set to the auxiliary database 4 Restores the datafiles for the auxiliary set to the auxiliary database 5 Recovers the auxiliary database to the desired point in time 6 Exports the dictionary metadata for the recovered tablespace from the auxiliary database 7 Imports the dictionary metadata for the recovered tablespace into the target database 8 Deletes all auxiliary files Steps 6 and 7 are critical The export process writes out the definitions of all objects in the auxiliary tablespace set as they are at the point in time to which the recovery was made; the import process then reads this information into the target database, replacing all current definitions This completes the process of taking the affected tablespace(s) back to a previous point in time, while leaving the remainder of the target database current There is one final step that must be performed manually: bringing the recovered tablespace online PART III.

Performing a TSPITR with RMAN is simple but there are a few steps to be done before and after to ensure a successful operation

Other tablespaces may have objects with dependencies on objects in the tablespace to be recovered The rules for TSPITR state that the tablespace(s) to be recovered must be self-contained, with no dependencies on objects in other tablespaces that are not to be recovered For example, if a table has indexes they too must be recovered Use the data dictionary view TS_PITR_CHECK to identify any dependencies, as in this example, which checks whether objects in the tablespace named INTERFACE have any dependent objects in other tablespaces, and whether objects in other tablespaces have dependent objects in the INTERFACE tablespace:

Select the area you want to be visible (not hidden) and click the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette to automatically create a mask that hides all of the areas outside of the current selection A layer mask is displayed as a second thumbnail on the layer in the Layers palette To edit the actual pixels on the layer, click once inside the regular layer thumbnail To edit the layer mask, click once inside the layer mask thumbnail You can tell when the actual pixels on the layer are currently active because there is an outline around the regular layer thumbnail Likewise, when the layer mask is active, its thumbnail is outlined Regardless of which way you go about creating the layer mask, you can always go back and edit it as necessary When using the paint tools to edit a layer mask, understand that painting with white reveals areas of the layer, while painting with black hides them In fact, notice that when the layer mask thumbnail is outlined indicating it s currently active and editable the only colors available to you are black and white

The view is populated with rows defining one-to-one relationships, where an object in the tablespace TS1_NAME has a dependent object in the tablespace TS2_NAME The view also lists objects that cannot be included in a point-in-time recovery, such as advanced queue tables This are indicated by the value -1 in the TS2_NAME column To resolve any issues found, you can either temporarily remove the dependencies or add the tablespace containing objects with dependencies to the recovery set You are better off with the latter, however, to ensure that your tables remain logically consistent with one another

In addition to resolving any dependencies with the tablespace to be recovered, you also need to identify any objects created after the target time that will be lost if you recover the tablespace You can use the data dictionary view TS_PITR_OBJECTS_ TO_BE_DROPPED to determine which objects you will lose after your target recovery time, as in this example:

Right-click (Windows) or OPTION-click (Mac) on a layer mask thumbnail to reveal additional options, such as the ability to discard or disable it
